Artist's Comments

For my Photography II class we were given our Assignment 7, which entailed us going out and taking pictures of whatever we wanted, but we had to bring them into Photoshop and convert them into a high contrast black and white photo.

Out of all the photos I took and submitted for this assignment I think this is my favorite. I love the contrast and composition on this one. To me this photo gives the impression that the violin is commanding that it be played and heard. Maybe it's just me, but that's what I feel when I look at it, but then I love stringed instruments and the sound they produce not to mention I played the violin for about 3 years so I'm a little biased when it comes to interpreting the photo.

Wow. Just... simply... wow:+fav:

great shot!
at first glance (with the basic photography lessons ive learned over this past year) i really noticed the strong contrast!
i submitted a b/w photo into a contest and at the time wasnt sure what to do, so just took a shot i thought looked ok. though it did not do well in the contest, the notes by the judges consisted of great idea, but poor contrast. black and white photos need contrast to be eye catching...and with this series of pictures you really nailed it!

( ^thats a general comment for the whole series :) )

as for this photo specifically...
ive been to many violin concerts and heard some of the most beautiful music played. although the people were just the average "no-name" performers, they loved the music and it showed. when i look at this, i can almost hear the music, and feel the love they had for it!
amazing shot
and great job with the contrast

Thank you so much!

The way I was able to get the high black and white contrast was through a technique using Photoshop. Since taking both of my photography classes they've stressed to us to always take our photos in color and then process them into a black and white photo using Photoshop or some other editing software. So thats how I do all my black and white photos now, which makes sense because you can always change the photo back to color if that is what it was originally taken as, but if you take it in black and white originally your stuck with it as it is.

yeah, whenever i've done digital black and white thats what i have done. the requirement for the contest was traditional black and white film though.

do you just desaturate, or do you adjust contrast/brightness as well?

Well, for the high contrast black and white photos I use a few different adjustment layers in Photoshop to do the job.

I first open up the photo and duplicate the layer and make a new set(folder) and place the duplicated layer in that. Then I make sure the duplicated layer is selected and then I select gradient map from the adjustment layer menu. I make sure the gradient goes from black(left) to white(right). After that I select the duplicated layer again and select the hue/saturation from the adjustment layer menu and bring the saturation to -100. Then I select the duplicated layer again and click on the channel mixer from the adjustment layer menu. I make sure the monochrome box is checked and I usually mess with the red and contrast settings until I get the look I want.
